Moment-less arches for reduced stress state. Comparisons with conventional arch forms

This paper presents a study of two-pin arches constant cross-section that are moment-less under statistically prevalent (permanent) load. The defined by analytical form-finding previously reported in Lewis (2016) [1]. work provides guidance regarding the solution process, and expressions for reactions axial forces. New results include derivation arch length, method finding co-ordinates individual segments pre-fabricated construction. accuracy shape prediction inextensible is good, compared to from elastic models. Case studies report on medium large-span arches, with latter resembling iconic Hoover Dam arch. Comparative conventional forms (mostly parabolic configuration), carried out using permanent variable loads. Additionally, analysed discrete load transfer deck. Circular only, shown be extremely inefficient resistance. Moment-less found provide minimal stress response loading require least amount material – feature observed natural objects. These characteristics important durability perspective key concern our future infrastructure.
